About the event

On the Friday following St Valentine’s day, Stoke Newington Early Music Festival presents a recital of music by Canadian baritone Jonathan Brown and British fortepianist Steven Devine.

The programme features Beethoven’s song cycle An die ferne Geliebte (To the Distant Beloved) a ‘ring of songs’ about a young man longing for his faraway sweetheart. With their beautiful images of nature and springtime, these songs will offer listeners a foretaste of the brightening year ahead. Steven Devine, one of this country’s finest early keyboard players, will be performing Beethoven’s famous Moonlight sonata and Mozart’s Fantasy in D minor, on a model of fortepiano from Beethoven’s time.

The programme also includes two songs on the theme of love by Haydn, setting poems by William Shakespeare and Anne Hunter. The novelty of the evening will be Nocturnes for voice and fortepiano by the extraordinary French composer of the Revolutionary era, Hélène de Montgeroult.
